How To Fly Drones For Beginners

A drone is a remotely-controlled aircraft that is used for aerial photography and surveillance. Drone technology has existed since World War II. DJI's Phantom series of quadcopters was the first to be commercially used. Since then, there have been many different types of drones available, from beginner-friendly models like the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 to professional-grade multi-rotor craft like the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many ways to fly a drone.

  1. Remote control - This allows you to control the drone from your hand. There are two main types, On/Off switches (like radios) and joysticks.
  2. Manual Control – This allows remote operation of the drone via GPS coordinates using a smartphone application. You will need to keep track of where the drone is going and follow the directions from the app.
  3. Autonomous Flight – This is when the drone handles all the piloting tasks. The drone is able to fly autonomously, without the need for human intervention. It must have a builtin camera, sensors capable of taking images and data to enable autonomous flight.
  4. Triggered flight - This is similar to manual control except that the pilot sets up a preprogrammed route and the drone follows the route until it reaches its destination. The drone automatically lands once the route has been completed and returns to the base.
  5. Landing Gear - Some drones come equipped with landing gear that allows them to land safely if they lose power or run out of battery during flight.
  6. Goggles - Some pilots wear goggles to protect themselves from debris while operating.
  7. Camera - Certain drones come with cameras that allow you to take photos and videos from high above.
  8. Obstacles – Some drones have obstacle avoidance systems that stop them from colliding with obstacles.
  9. Speed - Some drones can reach speeds of over 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life - Most drones last between 20 and 3 hours depending on how much power they have.
  11. Some drones are capable of traveling up to 30 miles depending upon their make and model.
  12. Power source - Some drones require an external power source; others work off internal batteries.
  13. Weight - Some drones weigh less than 1 pound, whereas other models weigh up to 4 pounds.
  14. Size - The size of drones varies from small, easily carried devices to more substantial crafts that weigh in excess of 50 pounds.
  15. Price - Drones come in a variety of price categories, including high-end models which can run into the thousands and low-cost options that can start at $100.
