Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

While Russia, the United States and other countries are keen to have more modern aircraft, Ukraine has not been able to provide the same training for its soldiers. While the Ukrainians do have training on aircraft and vehicles in Western countries like Germany, they are not able to get the same training on drones in Ukraine. The Ukrainians are used a lot to trucks and older equipment, so drones are much easier for them to use. In addition, drones do not require "pilots," making them easy for soldiers to use. Drones also have an easy to use interface, much like those found in video games.

Aerorozvidka

The Ukrainian military uses a unique approach to combating ISIS in eastern Ukraine: octocopters equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime missions. Some drones are fitted with anti-tank weapons and even have the capability to light up columns. These drones are highly maneuverable, and can carry as much 11 lbs payload. They are small enough to fly low above targets and drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka began life as an IT enthusiast team. Now, Aerorozvidka operates as a military aircraft reconnaissance unit. Although the organization started as a civil drone company, it grew into a fully-fledged unit with its head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Aerorozvidka relies heavily on crowdfunding and donations for its continued existence, since many of the components used in drones are made in America.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplied Ukraine with the armed "Switchblade", drones that are capable of hitting Russian tanks hundreds of miles away. These unmanned aircraft vehicles were created by the US Air Force in response a Ukrainian request. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson, stated that more than 120 of these machines are currently being sent to Ukraine. However, there are no details on how the Switchblades might be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade small drone can be launched easily from a tube. It is capable of traveling 40 kilometers. The Switchblade can hit Russian convoys from 6 miles away, unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft are easy to set up during conflicts like the Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly faster than the Bayraktar which is currently the U.S. ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

The US recently announced a military aid package worth $800 million to Ukraine. One of those packages includes the delivery of 121 unmanned planes, known as "Phoenix Ghosts," that are designed to terrorize Russian troops. These unmanned aircraft can fly for 30 to 40 minutes over large areas and are equipped with cameras and warheads. Switchblade, which weighs in at 5.5 pounds and can be used to destroy armored vehicles or tanks, is one such drone.

These small, lightweight aircrafts are equipped with a powerful, low-flying gimbal, allowing them to operate from air, land, or sea. Any advantage an opponent has over their counterpart in an aerial battle like this is vital. Russian kamikaze aircrafts pose a threat to that advantage. This capability will likely be key to Ukraine's military, as it can easily break Russian sieges and attack command-and-control nodes. Although such capabilities could be a liability for both sides it could make a significant difference in the battlefield and help Ukraine emerge victorious.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia has begun integrating its ZALA KYB loitering munitions into the military arsenal of the country. These drones can use deadly loitering munitions similar to bazookas. This could lead to the proliferation these autonomous killing machines on black markets. But experts and observers are worried. What can the U.S. do?

Kirby says that more than 121 Switchblade drones have been sent by the U.S. to Ukraine to assist Kiev in fighting Russian forces. The Switchblade drone, which weighs in at 5.5 lbs, can hover over an area for 30 to 40 minutes. It is fitted with a camera and a small warhead. Its mission is to eliminate the opposition forces within Ukraine.
